lewisia|luːˈɪzɪə, -ˈɪsɪə| [mod.L. (F. Pursh Flora Americæ Septentrionalis (1814) II. 368), f. the name of Meriwether Lewis (1774–1809), American explorer + -ia1.] A small perennial herb of the genus so called, belonging to the family Portulacaceæ, native to western North America, and bearing solitary or clustered pink or white flowers and leaves arranged in a rosette at ground level.
