homogentisic acid: a crystalline compound, C8H8O4, which oxidizes to a black compound in air, is an intermediate in the metabolism of aromatic amino-acids, and is excreted in large amounts by persons with alkaptonuria; alkapton, 2,5-dihydroxyphenylacetic acid. So homoˈgentisate, a salt or ester of this acid.
