The tassels of twisted and knotted cord worn by orthodox Jewish males on the corners of certain garments, esp. the tallith; cf. fringe n. 1; also, a small rectangular garment, with a large hole in the middle and with tassels attached to each corner, worn over the vest but under the shirt.
Translated as ‘fringes’ in A.V. and R.V. and as ‘tassels’ in N.E.B. (see Numbers xv. 38, Deut. xxii. 12).
