Suez|ˈsuːɪz, ˈsuːəz| The name of an Egyptian port [Arab. al-Suways] at the head of the Red Sea, used attrib. and absol. to denote the military and political crisis which resulted from the nationalization of the Suez Canal in 1956; Suez group (now Hist.), a group of Conservative MPs who opposed the withdrawal of British troops from the Suez Canal Zone in 1954; hence applied to other groups advocating the presence of British troops in the Middle or Far East.
