desmid Bot.|ˈdɛsmɪd| [ad. Bot. L. Desmidium (generic name), f. Gr. type *δεσµίδιον, dim. of δεσµός band, chain.] A plant of the genus Desmidium, or family Desmidiaceæ of microscopic unicellular algæ; so called because sometimes found united in chains.
