a ductile aluminum alloy. The chemical composition of avial’ is 0.45–0.9 percent magnesium, 0.5–1.2 percent silicon, 0.2–0.6 percent copper, 0.15–0.35 percent manganese (or the same amount of chromium), no more than 0.5 percent iron, and no more than 0.1 percent zinc; the remaining percentage is aluminum. This alloy possesses a high ductility and a satisfactory resistance to corrosion. It is widely used in the production of medium-strength parts which are complex in shape, especially those which are forged or stamped. Avial’ is used in the manufacture of propeller blades for helicopters, sections, casings for engines, and the like. In those instances where a greater need for corrosion resistance is anticipated, the copper content is reduced to 0.1 percent.
