Dorfman, Iakov

Dorfman, Iakov Grigor’evich

Born Mar. 26 (Apr. 7), 1898, in St. Petersburg. Soviet physicist. Doctor of physical and mathematical sciences (1934).

Dorfman graduated from the Leningrad Polytechnic Institute in 1925. From 1921 to 1931 he worked at the Leningrad Physicotechnical Institute. In 1958 he began working at the All-Union Institute of Scientific and Technical Information. In 1964 he became head of the physics section of the Institute of the History of the Natural Sciences and Technology of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR. His principal works are on the physics of magnetic phenomena. In 1923, Dorfman expressed the possibility of the resonance absorption of electromagnetic energy in paramagnets. In 1927 he experimentally proved that the molecular field in ferromagnets is not of magnetic origin. In 1930, together with la. I. Frenkel’, he theoretically substantiated the domain structure of ferromagnets. In 1951, Dorfman theoretically established the existence of cyclotron resonance. He is also the author of works on the history of science.
