Zhdanov

(until 1948, Mariupol’), a city in Donetsk Oblast, Ukrainian SSR. Located on the Sea of Azov at the mouth of the Kal’mius River. Seaport and industrial center of the south-east Ukraine. Railroad station (Zhdanov). Population 446,000 in 1971 (31,200 in 1897, 222,400 in 1939, 284,000 in 1959).

Zhdanov is a major center of the metallurgical, machine-building, and chemical industries. The city’s oldest industrial enterprise is the Il’ich Metallurgical Works. The Azovstal’ Works, a major ferrous metallurgical enterprise, was constructed during the years of the prewar five-year plans. There are factories for heavy machine building and the production of coke, gas, and chemical byproducts. Other industrial enterprises include plants for the production of metal structures, medical technical equipment, and electrical home appliances; a ship-repair center; and metalrolling and metal-stamping mills. The food industry is represented by meat-packing and fish-canning plants, an oil mill, a milk-processing plant, and a distillery for the production of vodka and liqueurs. The light industry comprises clothing, hosiery, and net-making factories. Zhdanov has a metallurgical institute, a branch of the Odessa Institute for Maritime Transport Engineers; industrial, metallurgical, industrial economics, and Soviet trade technicums; and medical and music schools. Also in Zhdanov are a regional Russian-language dramatic theater, a museum of local lore, and a museum in the former home of A. A. Zhdanov.

The central, southern, and northern parts of the city (separated by the floodlands along the Kal’chik and Kal’mius rivers) are being built up with many mikroraions (neighborhood units in urban planning) of buildings ranging from five to nine stories high. Between 1959 and 1968, 1,509,900 sq m of living space has been added; 7,321 hectares has been planted with trees and shrubs. Among the noteworthy structures of the Soviet period are the sanatorium of the miners’ trade union central committee (1939, designed by O. V. Luk’ianov), the Iskra Palace of Culture (1966, designed by M. lu. Petukhov), and the building of the Il’ichevskii raion committee of the Communist Party of the Ukraine and the raion executive committee (1971, designed by K. I. Rozenberg).

Zhdanov is a sea-climate and mud-bath resort. Its summers are quite warm with an average July temperature of 23°C, and its winters are mild, with an average January temperature of -5°C. Annual precipitation totals approximately 450 mm. There are sanatoriums, rest homes, and facilities for mud baths. People with gynecological problems and ailments of the organs of motion and support and the peripheral nervous system are treated here. Therapeutic remedies include the climate, saltwater bathing (from June through August), and sea silt mud.

The city was founded in the late 18th century and was the native city of A. A. Zhdanov, whose name the city now bears.
