Simonas Stanevicius

Stanevičius, Simonas

 

Born before Oct. 26, 1799, in the village of Kanopénai, in what is now Raseiniai Raion; died Feb. 27 (Mar. 10), 1848, in the village of Stemplés, in what is now Šiluté Raion. Lithuanian poet, folklorist, and historian.

Stanevčiius graduated from the University of Vilnius in 1826. He compiled and published collections of Lithuanian folklore, including Songs of Zemaitija (1829) and Notes to Songs of Zemaitija (1833), as well as Six Fables (1829), which contained K. Done-laitis’ fables. As a poet, Staneviéius aroused feelings of national awareness and unity among Lithuanians and expressed opposition to serfdom.
