Baja California Sur

a state of Mexico, located in the southern part of the California peninsula. Area, 73, 700 sq km; population, 128, 000 (1970). The capital is La Paz. The economy is based mainly on irrigated agriculture, with emphasis on long-fiber cotton, wheat, oil-producing plants, and citrus fruit. Nonferrous metallurgy is carried on in Santa Rosalia, and the food-processing, cotton-ginning, and oil-milling industries are centered in La Paz. There is also commercial fishing and pearl diving.
