Vijosa
Vijosa
(in Albanian; Aoos in Greek), a river in Greece and Albania. The Vijosa originates in the Pindus Mountains. It flows through a deep gorge, and, in its lower reaches, through a coastal lowland and empties into the Adriatic Sea north of the Albanian city of Vlora. The river is 249 km long, and its basin area is 6,600 sq km. High-water periods extend from October through May; the river becomes shallow in the summer. The mean annual flow rate is about 160 cu m per sec. The Vijosa is used for irrigation.
