peak expiratory flow measurement

peak expiratory flow measurement

A test widely used to determine the presence, and assess the degree, of any kind of obstruction to the air passages. The method is especially valuable in the assessment of ASTHMA and chronic BRONCHITIS and of the response to treatment. The instrument used is called a peak flow meter and this measures the maximum flow rate of air on the strongest possible forced expiration through a wide nozzle. See also FORCED EXPIRATORY VOLUME.
