Volcanology, Institute of

a research institute of the Far Eastern Scientific Center of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR; organized in 1962 in Petropavlovsk Kamchatskii on the basis of the volcanology laboratory of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR (Moscow) and the Kamchatka Geological-Geophysical Observatory of the Siberian Division of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR (Petropavlovsk-Kamchatski!). As of 1970 the institute’s facilities included laboratories for the study of surface volcanic activity, submarine volcanic activity, postvolcanic processes, hydrogeology and geothermy, and volcanic physics and a network of geophysical stations. The Kamchatka (Kliuchevskaia) Volcanological Station, organized in 1935, is also part of the institute.

The basic work of the Institute of Volcanology is the study of contemporary active volcanism of the Kuril-Kamchatka zone and the Anthropogenic volcanism of other areas of the USSR, to predict volcanic eruptions, and to develop methods for using underground heat for practical purposes. The institute publishes collections of scholarly works, monographs, and the Biulleten’.
