a city under oblast jurisdiction in Rostov Oblast, RSFSR, on the Rostov-on-Don-Kharkov highway. Railroad station (Mikhailovo-Leont’evskaia). Population, 101,000 (1974; 48,000 in 1939). Coal is mined (Donbas). Novoshakhtinsk has by-product coke industry, light industry, and food industry, and also production of building materials. The city has an evening mining technicum. Novoshakhtinsk was formed in 1939 from several mining settlements.
