(kōrät`), city (1990 pop. 204,121), capital of Nakhon Ratchasima prov., S central Thailand, on the Mun River. Strategically located near the mountain pass leading from the central plain to NE Thailand, Nakhon Ratchasima is the administrative, economic, and transportation center of the Korat plateau. Copper deposits are nearby. Founded in the 17th cent., the city grew rapidly after the construction (1890) of the railroad from Bangkok. The nearby Royal Thai Air Force Base was an operation center for U.S. planes during the Vietnam WarVietnam War,conflict in Southeast Asia, primarily fought in South Vietnam between government forces aided by the United States and guerrilla forces aided by North Vietnam. The war began soon after the Geneva Conference provisionally divided (1954) Vietnam at 17° N lat.

Nakhon Ratchasima
a city in Thailand, located on a plateau along one of the channels of the Mun River in the Mekong basin. Capital of Nakhon Ratchasima Province. Population, 50,400 (1966). Transportation junction and trading center. Local products include building materials, paper, and food, primarily sugar. Nakhon Ratchasima is a traditional center of silkworm breeding and silk production.
