[i′nish·əl ′hed·iŋ] (navigation) The aircraft heading at the beginning of a rating period while using gyro steering.

initial heading

i. The aircraft heading at the start of a gyro rating period when using astro-gyro control. See final heading.
ii. In air interception, it is the heading given to the air defense aircraft at the moment of scramble or immediately after takeoff (e.g., “Mission 51, scramble, scramble, scramble, initial heading 072 degrees, climb to flight level 200 and contact Braveheart control on channel 12”).
