Kozarac, Josip

Born Mar. 18, 1858, in Vinkovci; died Aug. 21, 1906, in Koprivnica. Croatian writer.

Kozarac worked as a forester in Slavonia. His first works were romantic poems and comedies, but his talent was most brilliantly revealed in his prose works (the novels Dead Capitals, 1889, and Between Light and Darkness, 1891). Kozarac was a master of the short story (“The Beautiful Kata,” 1887, and “Tena,” 1894), realistically depicting life in his native land under growing capitalist oppression. Belief in the possibility of reforming capitalist society gave Kozarac’s writings a rational educational character.
