Hudson Strait
Hud′son Strait′ n. a strait connecting Hudson Bay and the Atlantic. 450 mi. (725 km) long; 100 mi. (160 km) wide. Hudson Strait
Hudson Strait a strait between the peninsula of Labrador and Baffin Island, linking Hudson Bay with the Atlantic Ocean. Length, about 800 km; width, 115–240 km. Average depth, 200–600 m. Widening in the southeast, the strait forms the vast Ungava Bay. About eight months a year the strait is filled with drifting ice floes, which, along with snowstorms and fog, create great difficulties for navigation. Marine animals are hunted here. Hudson Strait was first visited by S. Cabot in 1517. |
