单词 catechumen
释义

catechumenn.

/katɪˈkjuːmən/
Forms: Also in 1600s catechumene, catecheumen; in Latin form 1500s cathecuminus; plural 1500s–1600s catechumeni, catechumini, 1600s catechumany; also Middle English cathecumynys, 1600s catechumenies.
Etymology: < French catechumène, < Latin catēchūmenus , < Greek κατηχούμενος ‘one being instructed (in the rudiments of religion)’, present participle passive of κατηχεῖν : see catechesis n. The Latin word was long retained: the modern form, first found after 1600, was not universal till about 1700; the irregular plural in -ys, -ies occurs in 15th and 17th centuries.
1. A new convert under instruction before baptism. Used in reference to the ancient church and in modern missionary churches. Sometimes applied to young Christians generally, and especially to those preparing for the rite of confirmation.
