Origin: Either (i) a borrowing from Latin. Or (ii) a borrowing from Greek. Etymons: Latin cardiognostes; Greek καρδιογνώστης.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin cardiognostes (a1536 in Erasmus) or its etymon Hellenistic Greek καρδιογνώστης (New Testament) < ancient Greek καρδία heart (see cardia n.) + γνώστης person who knows (see prognostes n.).Compare earlier use of the Latin form cardiognostes in an English context:1609 W. Est Scourge of Securitie 25 In that Christ knewe their thoughts, he plainly shewed himselfe to be the true God, he is Cardiognostes, he is omniscius, hee searcheth euery secret corner of the hart.
