A human disease caused by a small, Gram-negative intracellular bacterium, Coxiella burnetii, typically acquired by inhaling organisms shed by infected animals (usually sheep, cattle, or goats), and having a variety of clinical manifestations, esp. as an acute flu-like illness or pneumonia or as chronic endocarditis. Also: infection of animals with this bacterium, which is usually asymptomatic (rare).
