Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from French. Partly a borrowing from Latin. Etymons: French cardialgie; Latin cardialgia.
Etymology: < (i) Middle French, French cardialgie heartburn (1546), and its etymon (ii) post-classical Latin cardialgia (apparently) heart disease (13th cent.) < Hellenistic Greek καρδιαλγία heartburn < ancient Greek καρδία heart (see cardia n.) + -αλγία -algia comb. form; compare ancient Greek καρδιαλγής suffering from heartburn.With the β. forms compare -y suffix2.
Medicine. Now somewhat rare.
Pain occurring in the region of the heart; spec. heartburn. Occasionally also: an instance of this.Pain arising in the heart itself is sometimes called cardiodynia.
