Etymology: < Cardan (1559 or earlier in English texts), Anglicized form of the surname of Geronimo (also written Gerolamo, Girolamo) Cardano (1501–76), Italian mathematician, scientist, and inventor: see further cardanic adj. Compare Jérôme Cardan, the form of Cardano's name often used in French texts.Cardano published his solution of cubic equations in 1545 and is credited with making the gimbal suspension known to his contemporaries, although he did not invent it.

1. As a modifier or in the genitive. Designating concepts, mechanisms, etc., devised or described by Geronimo Cardano, or attributed to him, esp. (a) designating a formula for solving cubic equations; (b) designating drive mechanisms incorporating universal joints and gimbals.
