Origin: Either (i) a borrowing from French. Or (ii) a borrowing from Latin. Etymons: French restant; Latin restant-, restāns.
Etymology: Either < French restant (c1228 in Old French; use as adjective of present participle of rester rest v.3), or < classical Latin restant-, restāns, present participle of restāre rest v.3 Compare Catalan restant (a1381), Spanish restante (15th cent.), Portuguese restante (1427), Italian restante (a1525). Compare slightly later restancy n.In sense B. 3 after post-classical Latin restantes, plural ( Linnaeus Philosophia Botanica (1751) viii. 222). N.E.D. (1908) gives the pronunciation as (re·stănt) /ˈrɛstənt/.
