Etymology: < German Adonit (E. Merck Bericht über das Jahr 1892 (1893) 26; < scientific Latin Adonis , genus name (see Adonis n.; compare Adonis n. 3) + German -it -ite suffix¹), with remodelling of the suffix after -ite suffix¹. Compare adonitol n.Quot. 1893 at adonitol n. is taken from an abstract of the short German paper cited above, in which Adonit is first used; quot. 1893 is taken from the abstract of a longer, slightly later German paper by the same authors, discussing the substance in more detail ( Archiv der Pharm. 231 (1893) 129–31).
