Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin zea.
Etymology: < classical Latin zea emmer wheat (Pliny), in post-classical Latin also one-grained wheat (6th cent.) < ancient Greek ζειά (in Hellenistic Greek also ζεά ) emmer wheat, in Hellenistic Greek also one-grained wheat, probably < the same Indo-European base as Sanskrit yava grain, barley, Avestan yauua grain, Lithuanian javas grain, cereal. In sense 2 after scientific Latin Zea, genus name ( Linnaeus Species plantarum (1753) I. 971).
1. The grain spelt, Triticum aestivum spelta. Obsolete.
