Etymology: < Yiddish n. + -ist suffix, in the specific sense after Yiddish yidishist (1914 in ‘Sholem-Aleichem’, pen name of Solomon Naumovič Rabinovič (1859–1916), Jewish writer, although probably attested earlier). Compare later Yiddishism n.
