Origin: From a proper name. Etymon: proper name Zeppelin.
Etymology: < the name of Ferdinand Adolf Heinrich August Graf von Zeppelin (1838–1917), German general and aircraft manufacturer, who designed airships of this kind. Compare German Zeppelin (1908 in a work co-authored by Zeppelin; 1904 or earlier in Luftschiff Zeppelin), French zeppelin (1908 or earlier).Zeppelin's ideas for dirigible airships were first outlined in 1874 and his designs formulated in detail in 1893. They were patented in Germany in 1895 and in the United States in 1899.
Now chiefly historical.
1. In full Zeppelin airship. A large German dirigible airship of the early 20th cent., long and cylindrical in shape and with a rigid framework. Also more generally: an airship. Cf. Zepp n.Zeppelins were used for reconnaissance and bombing during the First World War (1914–18), and as passenger transports both briefly before the war and then until the outbreak of the Second World War in 1939.
