Etymology: < Scottish Gaelic searg (adjective) withered, shrivelled, (noun) insignificant person or animal, person or animal who is sickly or shrivelled with age (Early Irish serg wasting disease, (hence) act of shrinking or declining (in late use also occasionally as adjective in sense ‘withered’), probably < the same Indo-European base as sorrow n.).
