Etymology: In early use cognate with or formed similarly to Middle Dutch winterlijc (Dutch winterlijk ), Middle Low German winterlik , Old High German wintarlīh (Middle High German winterlich ̌, German winterlich ), Old Icelandic vetrligr , Swedish vinterlig , Danish vinterlig < the Germanic base of winter n.1 + the Germanic base of -ly suffix1. In later use partly also directly < winter n.1 + -ly suffix1. Compare summerly adj. and also wintry adj.
1. Of, belonging to, or occurring in winter. Now somewhat rare.Not always distinguishable from sense 2.In quot. a1425 the gloss has apparently become attached to the Latin verb rather than the corresponding adjective.
