Etymology: < meth- comb. form + -ane suffix2, after German Methan (A. W. Hofmann 1866, in Monatsbericht der Königl. Preuss. Akad. der Wissenschaften zu Berlin, 1865 653).
Chemistry.
A colourless, odourless, highly flammable gas, CH4, the simplest of the alkanes, which is produced by decaying organic matter and in the guts of ruminants, occurs in natural gas and coal gas, and is used as a fuel. Cf. firedamp n., marsh gas n.
