Origin: Formed within English, by clipping or shortening. Etymon: Latin Clostridium difficile.
Etymology: Shortened < scientific Latin Clostridium difficile, name of a species of bacterium (1939 or earlier) < Clostridium Clostridium n. + classical Latin difficile , neuter singular of difficilis (see difficile adj.), although the usual pronunciation apparently reflects an apprehension that the name shows French difficile (see difficile adj.).
Frequently italicized. The Gram-positive, anaerobic, toxin-producing bacterium Clostridium difficile, which is a frequent cause of antibiotic-associated pseudomembranous colitis and hospital-acquired diarrhoeal illness. Cf. C. diff. n.
