Origin: Formed within English, by derivation; modelled on a German lexical item. Etymons: asunder adv., -ness suffix.
Etymology: < asunder adv. + -ness suffix, after German Außereinandersein (1771 or earlier as †Außereinanderseyn).
Philosophy.
In Hegelian philosophy: mutual externality; the state of being separate or apart from one another that characterizes things, esp. inorganic things, in the natural, material world (as opposed to the unity which characterizes the Idea: see idea n. 1c).
