Etymology: < white adj. + flag n.4 In sense 2 after French drapeau blanc (1800 or earlier in this sense; 1596 or earlier in sense 1).With use with reference to Burma (Myanmar) compare the Burmese name, ʔə̆.làn.bjù ( < elements meaning ‘flag’ and ‘white’).
1. A flag of white material displayed as a sign of peaceful or friendly intentions, desire for parley, or willingness to surrender. Also figurative. Cf. flag of truce at flag n.4 1b.

The term is generally used with reference to the period around 1948, when Burma gained independence from Britain.
