单词 white acre
释义

white acren.

Brit. /ˈwʌɪt eɪkə/, U.S. /ˈ(h)waɪd ˌeɪkər/
Forms: late Middle English whitacur, 1600s– white acre; English regional (south-western) 1700s witacre, 1700s–1800s whittaker, 1800s whitaker.
Origin: Formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: white adj., acre n.
Etymology: < white adj. + acre n.Compare earlier use of the compound as a (presumably descriptive) place name and field name; compare e.g. Witacre (1086; now Over and Nether Whitacre, Warwickshire), Whitacr, Whytacre (1296; now High Whitaker, Lancashire), and also the surname shown by Simon de Wit acra (c1180), itself probably reflecting earlier use in a place name. The following apparently shows either an isolated instance of descriptive use or a reference to a field name:1491 in T. Pape Medieval Newcastle-under-Lyme (1928) 177 The gap goinge into the Whitacurs of maister Wodds ground to be the common gappe.
