Origin: A borrowing from Cree. Etymon: Cree wīskacān.
Etymology: < Cree wīskacān Canada jay; in α. forms with remodelling after whisky n.1 and the male forename John (see John n.). Earlier currency is apparently implied by whisky jack n.In white whisky john at sense 2 after Cree wāpiwīskacān, wāpiskacān northern shrike, lit. ‘white Canada jay’ (cited in quot. 1743 at whisky jack n.).
Chiefly North American.
1. The grey or Canada jay, Perisoreus canadensis. Cf. whisky jack n. Now rare.
