Etymology: < scientific Latin ruderalis (1760 as a specific epithet in botany; compare earlier ruderale (1753 as a specific epithet)) < classical Latin rūdera rudera n. + -ālis -al suffix¹. Compare French rudéral (1802), Italian ruderale (1809), both adjectives, both < scientific Latin.
