单词 whitebeam
释义

whitebeamn.

Brit. /ˈwʌɪtbiːm/, U.S. /ˈ(h)waɪtˌbim/
Forms: see white adj. and n. and beam n.1
Origin: Apparently formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: white adj., beam n.1
Etymology: Apparently < white adj. + beam n.1, with reference to the white undersides of the tree's leaves. Compare earlier whitten n., and perhaps also earlier quickbeam n.The following earlier quots. may show similar formations, although in each case the identity of the tree in question is uncertain and the semantic motivation unclear:a1300 Trilingual Gloss. (Sloane) in Eng. Stud. (1989) 70 297 Catona, witbeam.1552 R. Huloet Abcedarium Anglico Latinum Whyte beane [sic; 1577 whytebeame] tree. Tamarix, Tamariscus. In quot. a1300 the English word is used to gloss post-classical Latin catona in uncertain sense (probably ‘quince’), which may be either a variant of, or a transmission error for, coctanum quince (see coyn n.). In quot. 1552 the English word glosses classical Latin tamarix tamarisk n.; compare quot. 1587 at quickbeam n. Compounds.
A small deciduous tree of temperate Eurasia, Sorbus aria (family Rosaceae), having large leaves with silky white hairs on the underside and bearing flat corymbs of white flowers succeeded by scarlet berries (also common whitebeam). Also (frequently with distinguishing word): any of a number of similar trees of the genus Sorbus, including apomictic species or microspecies thought to have arisen locally by hybridization of the common whitebeam with the rowan, service, and wild service trees. Frequently attributive, esp. in whitebeam tree.
