Etymology: < well adv. + doer n. Compare earlier good doer n., and also benefactor n., and (with sense 2) evil-doer n.Compare Old English weldōnd benefactor (see well-doing adj.), and also Middle Low German waldēder , German Wohltäter (16th cent., now only in sense 1).
1. A person who helps others by performing good deeds; a benefactor, a philanthropist. Cf. good doer n. 1, do-gooder n.
