单词 watusi
释义

Watusin.adj.

Brit. /wəˈtuːsi/, /wɑːˈtuːsi/, U.S. /wɑˈtusi/, East African English /waˈtusi/
Inflections: Plural unchanged, Watusis.
Forms:

α. 1800s– Watusi, 1800s– Watussi, 1900s– Watutsi.

β. In sense A. 1 and B. 1800s– Batusi, 1900s– Batussi, 1900s– Batutsi.

γ. In sense A. 1 and B. 1900s– Abatusi (rare), 1900s– Abatutsi, 1900s– aBatutsi.

Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from Swahili. Partly a borrowing from Rwanda. Etymons: Swahili Watusi, Rwanda Abatutsi, Batutsi.
Etymology: < (i) Swahili Watusi < wa- , plural class prefix + -tusi ( < Rwanda -tutsi Tutsi n.), and its etymon (ii) Rwanda Abatutsi, Batutsi (singular Umututsi).Originally a plural form, but also used as a singular form in English (sometimes with a secondary plural form in -s ). Some forms (e.g. Watutsi at α. forms and Batusi at β. forms) appear to show features of both Swahili and Rwanda etymons. These may either reflect developments within English or perhaps imply (partial) transmission via other Bantu languages with different phonologies. The dance (see sense A. 2) is probably so called on account of a supposed resemblance to African dance, perhaps with reference to the American films King Solomon's Mines (1950), which features Tutsi dancing, and its sequel Watusi (1959).
A. n.
1. A member of an ethnic group forming a minority of the population of Rwanda and Burundi. Now largely superseded by Tutsi n.
