Etymology: < P. Webley & Son, the name of the British company which produced the weapon (later Webley & Scott, after a merger with W & C Scott and Sons in 1897).Compare earlier attributive use of the company name to designate a firearm manufactured by them:1879 Logansport (Indiana) Chron. 18 Jan. The Webley gun is from $6 to $8 higher in price than the Wm. Moore.1889 Field 4 May 618/1 After an exhaustive trial..the new Webley revolver..has been adopted by the English Government.
