Etymology: < the name of Vienna (see Vienna n.) + circle n., after German Wiener Kreis Wiener Kreis n. Compare slightly earlier Wiener Kreis n.
A group of empiricist philosophers, scientists, and mathematicians active in Vienna in the 1920s and 1930s, chiefly concerned with methods of verifying statements, the formalization of language, the unification of science, and the elimination of metaphysics, who were influential in the development of logical positivism. Cf. Wiener Kreis n.
