Origin: A borrowing from Tamil. Etymon: Tamil vaḷaittaṭi.

Etymology: Apparently < valai- (in Tamil vaḷaittaṭi; < vaḷai- to curve, bend + taṭi stick, staff), with insertion of r (within English) perhaps by association with either Tamil vaḷār twig, or with the name of the Kallar people (see Kallar n. and compare collery stick n. at that entry).Compare the following passage, apparently showing the Tamil compound vaḷaittaṭi in an English context, but already with the inserted r and the English plural ending -s:1868 J. H. Nelson Madura Country ii. ii. 44 Some Kallans..came down south with a number of dogs on a grand hunting expedition, armed with..pike, bludgeons and Vallari Thadis or bomerangs.
