Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin Velociraptor.
Etymology: < scientific Latin Velociraptor (see quot. 1924) < classical Latin vēlōci- , vēlox swift (see velocity n.) + raptor (see raptor n.).
Palaeontology.
A genus of small dinosaurs of the Cretaceous period which, like other dromaeosaurids, were bipedal predators with forelimbs capable of grasping and a distinctive large recurved claw on the second toe; (also velociraptor) a dinosaur of this genus. Also in extended use.
