A British volunteer force originally instituted in 1908 and organized on a territorial or local basis to provide a reserve of trained and disciplined manpower for use in an emergency. Cf. Territorial Force n. at territorial adj. and n. Compounds; territorial n. 1.From 1908 to 1920 the Territorial Army was officially known as the Territorial Force. In 1967 the Territorial Army and the Army Emergency Reserve were merged to create a civilian defence force known as the Territorial and Army Volunteer Reserve, itself renamed the Territorial Army in 1979.
