Etymology: < Mexican Spanish bato, vato, probably specific use of Spanish bato fool, rustic (1859), of uncertain origin.Use of Mexican Spanish bato as a form of address for a young man is recorded among Mexican-American youth in Los Angeles from 1948:1948 B. W. Griffith Amer. Me Gloss. 310/2 Bato, boy (hórale bato!).
U.S. slang.
Chiefly among Spanish speakers: a man, ‘guy’; spec. a male member of a Mexican-American youth subculture. Also as a form of address.
