单词 bruisewort
释义

bruisewortn.

Brit. /ˈbruːzwəːt/, U.S. /ˈbruzˌwərt/, /ˈbruzˌwɔrt/
Forms: see bruise v. and wort n.1; also Old English brysewyrt.
Origin: Apparently formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: bruise v., wort n.1
Etymology: Apparently < bruise v. + wort n.1, perhaps so named with reference to its healing properties (see note at definition and compare early use of bruise v. in sense ‘to injure, batter, crush’). Compare the likely semantic motivation of bonewort n., also used with reference to the common daisy.
Now historical.
Originally: either of two plants, comfrey, Symphytum officinale, and the common daisy, Bellis perennis. In later use also: soapwort, Saponaria officinalis (now rare). Both comfrey and the common daisy have been used in the treatment of wounds and bruises and of diseases of the lungs.
