Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin probrum.
Etymology: < classical Latin probrum reproach, insult, disgrace < pro- pro- prefix1 + the Indo-European base of classical Latin ferre to bear (see bear v.1) + classical Latin -um , suffix forming nouns. With the sense compare ancient Greek προϕέρειν to allege by way of reproach, to reproach, and classical Latin prōferre aliquid in medium to publish, disclose (compare profer v.).
Obsolete. rare.
