Etymology: < uncanny adj. + valley n., after Japanese bukimi no tani, title and key concept of an article (1970) by Japanese roboticist Masahiro Mori < bukimi uncanniness (1706 or earlier, < bu- un- + kimi feeling; both < Middle Chinese) + no, possessive particle + tani valley.The term refers to a steep dip (the ‘valley’) depicted in a line graph created by Mori which plotted people's emotional responses to robots of increasingly humanoid appearance.
