单词 uncanny valley
释义

uncanny valleyn.

Brit. /ʌnˌkanɪ ˈvali/, /ʌŋˌkanɪ ˈvali/, U.S. /ˌənˌkæni ˈvæli/
Origin: Formed within English, by compounding; modelled on a Japanese lexical item. Etymons: uncanny adj., valley n.
Etymology: < uncanny adj. + valley n., after Japanese bukimi no tani, title and key concept of an article (1970) by Japanese roboticist Masahiro Mori < bukimi uncanniness (1706 or earlier, < bu- un- + kimi feeling; both < Middle Chinese) + no, possessive particle + tani valley. The term refers to a steep dip (the ‘valley’) depicted in a line graph created by Mori which plotted people's emotional responses to robots of increasingly humanoid appearance. Empathy for the robot tended to increase as its appearance became more human, but then decreased suddenly as the robot's resemblance to a human began to approach—but not achieve—verisimilitude.
Used in reference to the phenomenon whereby a humanoid robot or computer-generated figure bearing a close but imperfect resemblance to a human being arouses a sense of unease or revulsion in a person viewing it.
