Etymology: Cognate with Middle Dutch gestanden (Dutch †gestanden ), Old Saxon gistandan , Old High German gistantan , Gothic gastandan < the Germanic base of y- prefix + the Germanic base of stand v.; compare also ( < a closely related shorter base: see discussion at stand v.) Old Dutch gistān (Middle Dutch gestaen, Dutch †gestaan), Old Saxon gistān (Middle Low German gestān), Old High German gistān, gistēn (Middle High German gestān, gestēn, German gestehen).In Old English a strong verb of Class VI. It is less frequent than the corresponding unprefixed verb, although it is attested earlier in certain senses and also in additional (chiefly transitive) senses, including ‘to assail, attack, to oppress, afflict, to attend, be present at’. Occasional forms with double prefixation are attested, e.g. æt-gestandan to stand by, to assist, to stand up (rendering Latin assistere ) (compare at- prefix¹), ofer-gestandan to stand over (compare over- prefix), under-gestandan to stand under (compare under- prefix¹), although most instances could alternatively be interpreted as showing a preceding adverb rather than a prefix.
